Andrew McAleer
In 2005, Lexington native and local attorney Andrew McAleer was diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma. It took everything he had to beat the cancer. He then reflected on his life and decided to fulfill his lifelong dream to serve his country. He en-listed in the Army, graduated from Army Basic Com-bat Training, and was shipped off for a tour of duty in Afghanistan. A few months after returning home from his overseas mission, he was once again diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma. This time the prognosis was bad—four doctors told him his cancer was inoperable. With his “never say die” outlook, Andrew McAleer has achieved unimaginable success in the wake of overwhelming adversity. He attended Boston College, he became an attorney, he has written and published several novels and non-fiction books, became an adjunct professor at Boston College, served in the armed forces in Afghanistan, and recently became the oldest recruit in the history of the Lexington Police Department at age 51. Andrew has a powerful story to tell about overcoming adversity through having a positive outlook, and compassion and goodwill towards others
